Fishers of Men

Christ said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” What does that mean?  Well – first and foremost it is a command.  He’s wasn’t asking, “would you like to follow me?” He certainly wasn’t vague in the outcome.  He was straight forward.  All you have to do is follow Christ and HE will make you a fisher of men.  God himself will make you into something should you follow this one requirement – try and be Christ like.

What is a fisher of men and why would anyone want to do that?  In the age of ancient empires (creation to ~450AD) fishermen used nets to maximize their yield and minimize their time fishing.  When Christ stated the aforementioned requirement to become a fisher of men, he was speaking to men who were currently fishing, fishermen.  So, a fisher of men would likely be someone who, much like fishermen of old – would want to gather men in an efficient fashion to maximize their yield.  God’s words here are telling us that to maximize efficiency, we must follow Him.  In short, there is no way you will gather and collect men after God’s own heart should you not be following in the steps of Christ. Furthermore, should you follow Christ – it will happen regardless of what you do.  You don’t have to buy fancy nets, create goofy games, you don’t have to be a theologian or even have read the bible in it’s entirety – no, you must only follow Him and He will make you a fisher of men.

As we finalize the steps necessary to move to an operational platform for Lighthouse1 I can’t help but get excited about that premise.  That these boys will be taught proper, biblical, classically masculine qualities – ones that were given away by a weaker cohort of men who weren’t on guard. They will learn to be the light, the city on the hill that can’t be hidden.  They, if properly trained and centered on God and growth – will become a cohort of fishers of men. How exciting for our daughters.  How exciting for our community, our churches, our future grandchildren.  How exciting for our nation to have hope in returning to a nation under God.
